Still Life The
classical genre of the still life is a constant factor in Eisner’s work.
He kept varying the form from his early to his later works Unlike
the sketchy snapshots outdoors, the artist arranged and staged his still
life paintings with utmost accuracy in his studio. His
set repertoire of constantly inter-related objects include a simple wooden
chest of drawers, a draped tablecloth, a bundle of flowers, a glass bowl,
different fruits and vegetables and clay jugs and jars. Quite frequently,
a slate leaning against the wall can be detected in the background of the
picture, on which sometimes appear banal shopping lists as well as
political statements. In “Still Life with white tulips” the flower vase, jug and glass bowl correspond to the round forms of the fruits, while the slate, the sketched picture frames in the background, and the wooden table form a contrasting pair. Constantly rearranged objects from day-to-day enable the painter to find different aesthetic compositions and develop new formal solutions for this genre. Accuracy in the details of the portrayed objects is negligible as is the accuracy of the perspective. Instead, the surface of the objects is conveyed through specific colouring.
