Tivoli & Bakken

In his home country Denmark , Eisner became a recognised artist of Denmark , above all due to his cheerful illustrations of the long-established amusement parks Bakken and Tivoli .

He focused on social life scenes, capturing the causal gatherings of excursionists and strollers in the park.

During his numerous visits to the park, the artist depicted certain types of people crossing his path. They range from young mothers with their children, balloon vendors, passers-by taking a rest on the benches, the Tivoli-controllers with their typical red-ribboned caps and the Tivoli-Guards in the red and white uniforms marching through the historic gate.

Similar to the illustrations of Dyrehaven, these portrayals are pictographic snapshots, assembled with sketchy brushwork, a painting technique supporting their fleeting character. Eisner generally showed no interest in the refined shaping of faces, sometimes portraying entire groups of people in a summarised way, with nothing but short colour strokes and spots.
